Chapter Thirty One

Ryan's mood was positive when he arrived home and found the house empty. He almost picked up the phone to call Summer and ask her to come back, or to call Luke and ask him if he wanted to come over and play some playstation, but instead he just sat down on the couch to watch some tv and get his homework finished.
He was making a snack, still waiting for Sandy or Kirsten to get home, when the phone rang, and he grabbed it absently. "Hello, Cohen residence," he said.
"Uh, hi," came the response.
"Can I help you?" Ryan said.
"This is Seth."
"Oh, hi," Ryan said, unconsciously echoing the other boys earlier greeting. "This is Ryan."
"I figured."
"Your folks aren't home right now," Ryan continued. "Sandy was in court all afternoon, I guess it went later than he thought, and Kirsten's stuck with Julie Cooper."
"Ah, the dragon lady," Seth said knowingly.
Ryan couldn't help smiling slightly. "I heard something about that being her nickname," he said as he sat down on one of the stools.
"Do you mind talking for a while? Because I really gotta talk to mom or dad, but I'm kinda only allowed one phone call at the moment."
"You're not calling from jail, are you?" Ryan joked.
"I wish," Seth muttered. "Then I wouldn't have to deal with Winchester."
"Winchester?"
"He's so weird he makes me look normal. He's just as rich, but all neo-hippie, and he thinks I'm his soulmate... something about spirit animals and I'm an otter and he's a frog and his soul mate is an otter... I don't know. It's just freaky."
"Sounds like it," Ryan said, nodding. "I mean, dude... unless you swing that way..."
"No!" Seth said quickly. "No matter what the jerks at Harbor say, I don't."
"Well, when you get back here for the summer you'll have one less jerk to worry about," Ryan said. "I'm kinda friends with Luke Ward, and he promised me he wouldn't be an ass to you."
"I heard that he made this huge transformation lately," Seth said. "I've got a couple contacts in Newport still."
"You make it sound like you're a spy or something, man."
"I'm all about the stealth," Seth replied.
"Sure you are," Ryan said. "Oh, and jsut so you know, I haven't touched any of your comics."
"Sorry about that," Seth said. "I'm just... it's my thing. Comics, I mean, not being completely lame. Although some people think lame is my thing..."
"You're not exactly conveying to me that it's not," Ryan said, though he was chuckling.
"Right, yeah, bad impression here, huh?"
"I'll reserve judgement until we meet face to face," Ryan promised. He heard the front door open adn jumped off the stool. "I think one of them just got home," he told Seth. After a moment, Sandy stepped into the kitchen looking exhausted. "Seth's on the phone," Ryan said, offering it.
"Thanks, kid," Sandy said, taking the phone. "Hey, Seth, what's up?" he asked, followed by a frown. "Why would I get pissed at you?"
"Don't say pissed," Kirsten reprimanded as she walked in, carrying bags of take out.
"What kind of trouble?" Sandy asked Seth, ignoring his wife's question.
"Who is it?" Kirsten asked.
"Seth," Ryan supplied, reaching to help her unpack the food. "All I know is he said he was restricted to one phone call, but he said he wasn't in jail."
"You know that how?" Kirsten asked.
"He called before Sandy got back," Ryan said, shrugging. "We talked for a couple minutes."
Kirsten was torn between listening to Sandy's side of the conversation with Seth, which had gone alsmot silent as he listened, and talking to Ryan, and she decided she could ask Sandy later. "How'd that go?" she asked Ryan.
Ryan shrugged again. "Okay. It was just random talk... about spirit animals and otters and soulmates... and i don't really undertsand half of what the conversation was about, but... whatever. We got along, I guess."
"Good," Kirsten said, putting an arm around Ryan's shoulders to give hima half hug. "I want my boys to get along."
Ryan paused for a moment at Kirsten calling him one of her boys, but he found himself smiling, liking the way that sounded.
"You did what?!" Sandy yelled, making both Kirsten and Ryan jump. "Seth, what the hell were you thinking?!"
"What's wrong?" Kirsten asked, worried.
"He got caught with pot in his room!" Sandy said, furious. When he saw the startled, almost scared, look on Ryan's face, he forced himself to calm down. "Ryan, you don't need to hear this," he said, covering the reciever with his hand. "Everything's okay, but... why don't you take some food out to the poolhouse to eat?"
Ryan nodded. "Okay," he said quietly, doing as he was told.
Once Ryan had slipped out the doors, Sandy continued to talk to Seth. "How long have you been doing this?" he demanded. "Once is too many times," he said after a moment. "What the hell do otters and frogs have to do with anything?!"
To Be Continued...
I couldn't resist... lol... and now you know why I asked about Che's real name... lol... and don't take this first encounter between Ryan and Seth as how it'll be once Seth is physically there... he just couldn't afford to get hung up on... lol... and everything will change with the Summer revelation...
