Monkey In A Diaper

This one is LOOSELY based on the background of the movie 'Four Brothers', in a which social worker adopted four troubled boys that were considered lost causes that no one else wanted. But I only take that basic background.

Sophie Cohen (The OC) is the social worker/adoptive mom.
25 year-old Lucky Spencer-Cohen (General Hospital) is the oldest brother who's made good by beocming a cop.
22 year-old Jess Mariano-Cohen (Gilmore Girls) is the 2nd oldest, who's still the 'bad boy', but has become a somewhat successful author.
19 year-old Nathan Scott-Cohen (One Tree Hill) is the 3rd oldest, who's engaged to his pregnant fiancee, Haley James.
16 year-old Ryan Atwood-Cohen (The OC) is the youngest brother, who tends to date girls that are... a little crazy.

I haven't decided whether Sandy Cohen exists in this universe, but if he does, he never regained contacted with his mom after he left home as a teenager, and at best has only met Lucky.

"You're cheating," Jess insisted as Ryan won yet another hand of poker.

"I'm not," Ryan replied, collecting his winnings, which included $35, a chocolate bar, the promise of the use of Lucky's car for his next date, Nathan's promise of doing his chores for a week, and the garuntee of not being made to look like a jerk in Jess' next book. "You're just not as good as me."

"You're cheating," Jess repeated.

"Not by Cohen Rules," Lucky pointed out. "Counting cards is completely allowed, remember?"

"Which sucks for me, because I can't count cards to save my life," Nathan muttered.

"You're just pissed that you gotta vacuum your place then come over and vacuum here," Ryan said with a smirk. "And that you lost the chocolate bar that was suppose to be for Hales."

"I'll just tell her you stole it," Nathan replied.

Jess and Lucky snorted. "We all know that lately, Haley likes Ryan more than she likes you," Jess said.

"Like everyone likes him more than you?" Nathan countered.

"Enough, boys," Sophie said as she stepped into the kitchen, trying to keep her face stern as she looked at her four adoptive sons.

"Sorry, ma," all four replied.

"Who's winning?" she asked, nodding towards the table.

"He's cleaning up," Jess said with mild disgust as he gestured at Ryan.

"He's jealous that I'm better at counting cards than he is," Ryan replied.

"On that note, I've gotta get to work," Lucky said, getting up and grabbing his jacket off the back of his chair. He pulled his badge out, pulling the chain that held it over his head so it was centered on his chest. "Try not to get arrested on your way back to your place, Jess, it's just embarassing to have to come in to my own precinct and bail one of my brothers out... again."

"Last time was Nate's fault for telling me to floor it!" Jess protested.

"Right, blame the guy who's got a pregnant and permanently pissed off girlfriend," Nathan said, rolling his eyes.

"Nah," Jess said, slapping Nathan on the shoulder. "But I couldn't blame Mr. Law and Order, and Ry would have to talk to be at fault..."

"Funny," Ryan replied, making sure Sophie wasn't looking his way before giving Jess the finger.

"I saw that," Sophie said.

"They're all five years old," Lucky said, shaking his head in amusement as he kissed Sophie's cheek. "See you later, Ma."

"Be safe," Sophie warned.

"Always," Lucky promised. As he walked by, he pushed Ryan's head to the side. "Stop taking all their money, or they might have to move back in," he joked.

"If they do, they can share, I'm stealing your room," Ryan replied. "I am not putting up with Nathan's socks moving on their own ever again."

"I'm not that bad!" Nathan protested.

"Or Jess' light coming on at 3 in the morning followed by pencil scratches untilt he sun comes up," Ryan continued.

Lucky grinned. "I'm the least annoying brother," he said smugly before walking out, laughing.

"With these two as the competition, that's not hard to manage!" Ryan called after him.

"Just for that, the story about La Vida Loca is gonna make it's way into my next book," Jess said.

"Theresa will kill me, then kill you!" Ryan protested.

"Or she'll kill you, then castrate him," Nathan said.

"Right, not gonna tell that story," Jess agreed, much to the amusement of his brothers and mom. "I should get going, don't want the pencil scractesh to annoy sleeping beauty," he said as he got up, shoving Ryan's head the same way Lucky had. "You need a ride, Nate?"

"Yeah, Haley will kill me if I'm late again. Especially late and without chocolate."

Ryan rolled his eyes but held out the candybar. "I'm a sucker for anyone who puts up with you and agrees to carry your spawn," he said. "But if I ask her if the chocolate bar was good, she better know what I'm talking about."

"You think I'd steal a candy bar from my pregnant girlfriend?" Nathan asked.

"I think you're a Cohen brother, and we all have our criminal records," Ryan replied.

"Some more criminal than others, Mr. Grand Theft Auto by 8," Jess commented.

"Stop harassing eachother and go," Sophie said, waving her middle two out of the kitchen and following them. "Nathan, you bring Haley by here soon, alright? I wanna actually know the mother of my newest grandbaby."

"Deal, Ma," Nathan said, giving her a hug before he left.

Jess gave her a hug, too. "Nate's gotta do Ryan's chores for a week, so don't let him weasel out of it," he said with a grin.

"You'd think he'd learn not to offer that up in a poker game against any of you three," Sophie replied with a smile.

"We let Ry win," Jess added, loud enough for his little brother to hear him, before leaving.

"Yeah right! Ryan called back, laughing.

Sophie smiled as she shook her head in amusement. When she'd adopted Lucky, the first of her four 'lost causes', some of her coworkers had called her crazy. They'd insisted she had to be when she'd adopted a second boy, Jess, who had almost burned down her house smoking. Then had come Nathan, who hadn't turned criminal until after the adoption when he was tryign to test whether she really meant it when she said he was safe in her house. Ryan had been the last of the four, and while the older three had watched eachother's backs, it had been Ryan who had pulled them together into a real family.

He'd been underweight and covered in bruises when she'd brought him home, and the other three had almost immediately closed ranks around him, making sure he knew the rules of the house, and throwing in advice on which rules he could get away with bending and the best way to break a couple of them without getting caught. Sophie had pretended not to hear them tell Ryan about where she hid birthday and Hanakuh presents, and had barely scolded them at all for giving Ryan fighting lessons, because she knew that with those three for brothers, he'd need to defend himself from their reputations.

The three older boys had immediately made it clear that no one messed with theiur 'baby brother' and got away with it, and they'd all been arrested a couple times for getting into fights with people who'd looked at Ryan the wrong way. For Lucky it was anyone who asked Ryan any questions and his family, for Nathan it was anyone who so much as gave Ryan an annoyed look, and for Jess it was any man who looked at Ryan for longer than a couple seconds. They projected their own concerns and past hurts onto their brother, and refused to let him go through what they did, even though he was just as wounded as he had been.

For his part, Ryan had latched onto his new big brothers automatically, following them around and going to them when he was scared. Sophie hadn't really been surprised, since it had been Ryan's biological brother who had always protected him before, their mother too drunk or stoned or 'busy' to do anything but yell, and she'd been relieved that the older three had been so willing to be the brothers Ryan needed them to be.

"Whatcha thinkin' about, ma?" Ryan asked as he cleaned up the table.

"Just how right my colleagues were when they said I was crazy to adopt you four," Sophie teased, pressing a kiss to Ryan's forehead.

Ryan grinned and grabbed the glasses they'd used. "Your four lost causes, the biggest mistakes ever to grace the New York City Social Services Department," he said, rolling his eyes.

"Hey," Sophie said, catching Ryan's arm. "They were wrong," she said firmly. "You four are the biggest blessings I could have ever had dropped in my lap."

"Even with Lucky and his fake ID business, Jess starting fires, Nate and the shoplifting, and me with the fighting people three times me size?" Ryan asked softly.

"Even with all that," Sophie said. "You're my boys, thick and thin."

Ryan smiled and ducked his head. "Love ya', Ma," He said, kissing her cheek before putting the glasses in the sink.

"Unless you're homework is finished, I'll do those so you can go work," Sophie said.

"I can do them first, I'm almost done with the homework," Ryan said.

"Go," Sophie said, gently pushing him out of the kitchen. "I can handle some dishes if it means you keep those grades up and get into whatever school you want, even Ivy League."

"They'll never let me live it down if I get into Ivy League, Ma," Ryan said, even as he kissed her cheek and headed upstairs.

"I'll take care of your brothers if they pick on you for it," Sophie called after him.

Yeah... I have no idea where this came from, it's just an odd little idea I had to combine 4 of my favorite guys into one story... lol
