Chapter Eight
After a quick stop at the Crab Shack, Ryan, Luke, and Summer went to the poolhouse to hang out and play video games. "You're lucky, man," Luke said as he and Ryan sat on the floor at the end of the bed. "My brothers never give me longer than five minutes on the games before they're barging in and demanding to play."
"Eric and Brad are little freaks," Summer agreed from her place on the bed, leaning between the two boys to grab a handful of popcorn. "I swear, they're gonna end up shaving eachother's chests someday."
"What kind of person shaves their chest?" Ryan asked in disbelief.
"It's for waterpolo!" Luke defended. "All streamlined and..."
"Forget I asked," Ryan said. "Please, forget I asked."
"Yay, someone to help me mock Luke," Summer joked. "It's so much fun, isn't it?"
"Oh yeah," Ryan agreed with a grin. "Tons."
"Thanks a lot," Luke grumbled good naturedly. "Summer's bad enough on her own."
"All you gotta do is not give me ammunition, man," Ryan said.
"What I need is blackmail material on you to guarantee you keep quiet," Luke replied.
"Unless you plan to go to Chino and bribe my ex-best friend into spilling the dirt, you're not getting anything," Ryan replied. "So, how'd you two end up as friends, since you bicker so much?"
"Luke was dating my best friend, Marissa," Summer explained. "Then, like the pig that he is, he cheated on her with, and I am not making this up, Holly."
"Are you stupid, crazy, or attracted to slutty?" Ryan asked.
"All three," Luke admitted. "Marissa caught us during the big 'school's about to start' trip to Tijuana, and she flipped out and OD'd, almost died. So we break up, and Summer despises me for a while. Then Marissa gets a new boyfriend..."
"Who makes this man whore look good," Summer said. "Oliver was a lunatic. He got obsessed with Coop, and was like stalking her, and me because I was her best friend and I influenced her. Finally, after like months of him creeping everyone out, and me and Luke joining forces to try to convince Coop to dump Oliver, she finally listened. Except he lost it. He called her and told her he was gonna swallow a bunch of pills and begged her to go see him, so she went, and I went with her..." she trailed off, and moved to slide down onto the floor between the boys, her knees drawn up to her chest. "He had a gun, and he started waving it around... I thought he was gonna shoot one of us, but then he... he shot himself instead. Blew his own head off, splattered his brains all over us... Coop just lost it and wouldn't stop screaming..."
"She's in this hospital a couple hours from here," Luke said. "She's getting better, but..."
"It kinda hit everybody, and me and Luke bonded," Summer said.
"Wow, and I thought me and Theresa bonding over both our dad's being in jail was a story," Ryan mumbled, looking down at the floor then up at them again. "If you guys need to talk to someone who doesn't know her and only cares because you do..."
"Thanks, Chino," Luke said, nodding. "I get tired having to let Summer cry on my shoulder..."
"You sobbed like a baby the night Coop left!" Summer protested while Ryan laughed.
"No, I didn't!" Luke said, though it was clearly a lie.
"Like a baby," Summer said to Ryan, nodding while he kept laughing.
"Well she threw a fit and trashed her room!" Luke countered.
"First I saw a guy blow his brains out, then my best friend got sent to a mental hospital, I was a little... emotional..."
"You threw a jewelry box at your stepmother's head."
"The stepmonster deserved it! She was more worried that Daddy was cancelling appointments to stay with me, and therefore not getting paid, than she was about me," Summer said, resting her chin on her knees. "I hate that bitch."
"What's your dad do?" Ryan asked.
"Plastic surgeon," Summer said. "He makes the women of Newport even more fake, if you can believe that's possible."
"He's never around," Luke added. "If not for her stepmother, Summer's house would be party central."
"You gotta come over sometime," Summer said, her good mood coming back. "We can all hang out, go swimming... when your cast is off, obviously."
"Yeah, the cast is kinda in the way for a lot of stuff," Ryan said. "At least I can move my thumb enough to play," he added.
"How'd you break it, anyway?" Luke asked.
Ryan was quiet for a moment, then sighed. "I got hurt at work."
"Work? But you're like 16..." Luke said.
"15," Ryan replied.
"Whatever, the point is what were you doing working?" Summer said.
"My mom's a drunk and a junkie, okay? She chose her loser junkie boyfriend over me and kicked me out. Two days later I go home and she's moved. I had to work if I wanted to eat and be able to pay rent somewhere," Ryan said. "Construction, waiter... whatever I could find."
"Wow," Luke said. "Well, not like you gotta worry about that anymore, right man? The Cohens are loaded, you've got a place to live and food to eat... hell, you've got your own poolhouse with a stocked mini-fridge. You're set."
"Yeah, I guess," Ryan said.
"No guess about it, Chino," Luke said. "Mrs. Cohen laid into her dad for saying something to you at the party..."
"He called me a delinquent," Ryan said witha shrug. "Not that first time I heard the word."
"I'm sure it won't be the last time, either," came a voice from the doorway and they all turned to see Caleb standing just outside the poolhouse. "I was hoping to speak to you alone," he continued, his gaze fixed on Ryan.
"Okay," Ryan said.
Summer put a hand on Ryan's shoulder and leaned in. "You gonna be okay alone with him?" she asked.
"It'll be fine," Ryan said, getting up. "I'll see you guys tomorrow."
"I can pick you up for school," Summer offered. "Call me tonight if it's not okay."
"Sounds good, I'll ask Sandy and Kirsten when they get home," Ryan agreed. Once Summer and Luke had left, Ryan turned back to Caleb, who was now walking around the poolhouse, clearly snooping. "I haven't stolen anything if that's what you think," Ryan said.
"Are you going to?" Caleb countered.
"No," Ryan said. "In case you didn't know, I don't have anywhere to go except back on Hanlin street if I screw things up here. So I'm not gonna screw up."
"We'll see about that," Caleb said. "Your kind doesn't belong here. You belong in your little slums."
"What did I do to you, Mr. Nichols?" Ryan asked. "Why are you treating me like trash?"
"Because you are trash, and you'll never be anything more than that," Caleb said coldly before turning and leaving.
Ryan watched Caleb go, then wrapped his good arm around his stomach and went back into the poolhouse, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he sat on the edge of the bed and squeezed his eyes shut, rocking back and forth slightly.
This is all fucking trash like you is good for.
"I'm not doing this again," Ryan muttered as he put a hand over his eyes and tried to block out the memory of the man's voice, not wanting a repeat of his breakdown in the bathroom.
"Ryan?" Kirsten's voice called out from the patio.
Ryan glanced at the clock, startled to see that over an hour had passed since Caleb had left. He heard a footstep in the doorway and looked up to find Kirsten standing there, concern on her face. "Hi," he said.
"Are you okay, honey?" Kirsten asked, coming in and sitting down beside him. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing," Ryan said, shaking his head. He didn't want to say anything bad about her father, especially not what Caleb had said because he didn't want to risk her starting to think the same thing. "It's just been a really long day."
Kirsten seemed ready to ask more questions, but stopped herself. "Okay, well, I picked up Chinese on my way home, and if we don't hurry Sandy will eat it all," she said. They stood and started inside, but Kirsten stopped Ryan right as they left the poolhouse. "If you need to talk, you can come to either of us," she told him. "Remember that, okay?"
Ryan nodded. "Sure," he said. He took a deep breath. "Um... Summer offered me a ride to school tomorrow morning... is that okay?"
Kirsten smiled. "It's fine," she replied.
They continued into the house for dinner, and Ryan breathed a sigh of relief as they sat down and the topic centered on school. He could handle questions about his classes, his teachers, even questions about what he, Luke, and Summer had done. He just had to make sure they didn't know Caleb had been there. Then everything would be okay.
To Be Continued...
I swear, that wasn't the 'Kirsten's turn to comfort Ryan when he breaks down' scene I promised before... lol... that one is still coming...
